our story

Sydney-based Optometrist Shaun Chang moved to the Lake Macquarie region at the start of 2018.  Having grown up in New Zealand, Shaun wanted a peaceful lifestyle for his family.

Shaun started working as a locum optometrist, offering his service in Behavioural Optometry and ocular therapeutics in Kotara, East Maitland and Lake Munmorah.  Over time, he realised that many patients did not have the visual function or processing skills required to learn at school or play sports.  They needed vision therapy to develop those skills.

Eyes2Learn was created so Shaun could accommodate patients that required vision therapy.  Initially, patients were seen in a converted living room, but by the beginning of March 2020, Shaun was using a spare consultation room at Smart Eyes Optical in Charlestown.

The COVID pandemic and subsequent lockdown led to staffing changes. Shaun provided eye care to Eyes2Learn and Smart Eyes Optical patients.  He purchased a 3D ocular imager (OCT) to detect and monitor eye diseases.

Faced with the possibility that Smart Eyes was closing its doors, Shaun formally took over the practice in December 2022.  He did this to continue the practice’s tradition of providing quality, specialised eye care and functional eyewear.

If we use soccer as an analogy. Wearing spectacles is like wearing a pair of boots. It will help you run and kick better. Vision therapy is like coaching. You will learn how to play better.

What is

BEHAVIOURAL OPTOMETRY?

Behavioural optometry determines if a visual problem limits the patient’s education or performance outcomes.

This involves assessing visual defects, such as refractive error, strabismus and ocular health. There is also an assessment of visual deficits, such as visual processing.

What is

VISION THERAPY?

Vision therapy is experience-based learning for building and strengthening visual function and processing skills.

We use a combination of lenses, prisms, equipment and digital instruments to help you learn critical visual skills.

Every program is unique, depending on your goals.

What is

Our Approach to Eye Disease

Regular eye testing is crucial for good visual function.  A general eye examination involves optimising your eyesight and focusing ability and checking your eye health.

We use traditional and modern technologies to detect eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and macular degeneration. One of the technologies we use is Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT).

What is

Neuro-Rehabilitative Optometry

The world we see is a product of our brain’s processes.  Our eyes capture light and deliver it to the brain for processing.  Any insult to the brain, such as a stroke, will affect your vision.

Neuro-rehabilitative optometry is a subset of optometry that uses lenses, prisms, colour, filters and vision therapy to manage visual complications resulting from acquired brain injury.

Testimonial

We feel very lucky that we were referred to Shaun when our daughter was diagnosed with an eye turn. He was not only great at communicating with our 10 year old at her level, but he also provided a solid treatment plan to us so everyone knew what we were working towards. Being able to use a combination of daily online exercises at home with our visits with Shaun fit in well with our busy lives….not to mention the fun she had with virtual reality

Eyes4Everest

In the winter of 2013, Eyes2Learn optometrist Shaun Chang was trekking in the Everest region of Nepal. Dr Kamitemba Sherpa informed him some schoolchildren could not see the board. Shaun returned to Australia and set up Eyes4Everest - a charity dedicated to treating preventable blindness in mountain communities of Nepal. To read more about Shaun’s work, click this link.

Susan Larter Vision Trust

Susan Larter was one of Australia’s most respected behavioural optometrists.  Sadly, her life was cut short in a diving accident.

In honour of her, the Australasian College of Behavioural Optometrists (ACBO) formed the Susan Larter Vision Trust. The Trust provides funding to individuals that require vision therapy but cannot afford it.

Those who have done vision therapy with Shaun will know its benefit.  You can donate by clicking this link.
